Experience the UK’s highest free-fall abseil from the Olympic Park’s ArcelorMittal Orbit

You control the speed of your descent, so enjoy the breathtaking skyline of London from one of the most unique locations in the city.

Join the ranks of other brave adventurers and dangle in free space, 80m above the ground, creating lasting memories whilst raising much needed funds for Jami.

When: Sunday 10th September, PM

Where: ArcelorMittal Orbit, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, 5 Thornton Street, London E20 2AD
(nearest tube station Stratford – 15 minute walk)
(nearest parking, Car Park B at Westfield Shopping Centre Stratford)

Minimum Sponsorship requirements: we ask abseilers to pledge to raise a minimum of £500 each for Jami

The abseil team will greet you in a maximum group of five people at a time, before issuing your safety equipment: a full body harness, helmet, abseil and backup device. They will demonstrate how to use this equipment, ensure you understand and run through all the processes and safety considerations with you.

Once your safety system has been checked by your abseil instructor, you will begin your descent. You will be asked to lean backwards whilst lowering yourself over the edge of the platform, using your abseil device. As you continue downwards, your abseil instructor will keep control of your safety line. Your abseil device uses friction to slow your descent but some physical effort will be required to control the device.

Once past the abseil platform, you will dangle in the air suspended by your abseil line, which is backed-up by two safety lines. As you control the speed of your descent, you can take your time to enjoy the incredible views of some London’s most iconic structures, whilst moving towards the ground.

Upon arrival, another instructor will unclip you from the system and help you to remove your safety equipment. Your whole experience may be recorded via a GoPro, so don’t forget to relax and enjoy it!

Abseil participants must:

  • Be over 14 years of age (parental consent and supervision required if under 18).
  • Be over 1.2 metres in height.
  • Be less than 19 stone (120kg) in weight.
  • Be able to wear a harness which has a maximum width waist of 130 cm and a maximum upper thigh width of 75cm.
  • Not be suffering from any medical condition that may put your health & safety, or that of others, at risk.
  • Not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Not be pregnant.
  • Sign a declaration before abseiling.

We estimate your experience will last around 90 minutes but this can depend on numbers and weather conditions.

Your shoulders, midriff and upper legs should be covered. No loose clothing please e.g. long skirts or flowing cardigans. On your feet wear closed toe shoes, trainers or boots that will not fall off. Open toe shoes, flipflops, sandals or high heels are not permitted. Long hair must be tied back. Jewellery and scarves must be removed. Weather at the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit is often magnified, so bring a waterproof jacket and warm layer.

We will constantly monitor the weather situation and will keep you updated in advance if we feel that the weather may affect your booking. We reserve the right to postpone the abseil due to bad weather (strong winds, heavy rain, electric storms etc.) for safety reasons.

Spectators are welcome on the day. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is open to the public most days of the year. During these times friends and family can purchase tickets (www.arcelormittalorbit.com) to watch the abseil from the top of the structure. This also allows spectators to watch from beside the landing site, although there is limited space. Also please note that there is an exclusion zone around the actual landing site and entry by public is strictly forbidden for safety reasons.

It is also possible to watch from the roof terrace cafe, when it is open, or from just outside the boundary of the ArcelorMittal Orbit next to the abseil landing area – both provide a great view of the abseil and do not require paid entry to the attraction.

You must not take loose items onto the abseil platform, especially phones. Any personal belongings can be left in the lockers provided or at the bottom with a friend or family member.

There are some inherent risks associated with all adventurous activities. The abseiling team identify and manage these risks very carefully to ensure your safety at all times. They use:

  • Dedicated, experienced abseil instructors to instruct you on all aspects of safety.
  • Equipment that is regularly inspected and maintained.
  • Abseil instructors who are highly experienced.
  • A triplicate safety system.
  • The London Abseil requires physical exertion and physical strength. You must fully understand what the activity involves and ensure that you are capable of completing the abseil unless you have made special access arrangements in advance.
  • The London Abseil is psychologically challenging and participants are advised that they are likely to experience some level of fear.
  • Essential medication can be taken up to the abseil platform. You must notify your abseil instructor on the day of your abseil if require such medication.
  • You may wear hearing aids and spectacles provided they are secure and not loose fitting.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in a fit state of health to complete the abseil. If in doubt, you must consult your medical practitioner. Pregnant customers will not be admitted.
