Jami's response to recent suicides

Our community is affected by suicide, either directly or when we hear about the suicide of a public figure. We may feel deeply saddened and some of us may find this news triggering, affecting our own thoughts. Lately we have experienced both such events.

Young people have recently died through suicide. These deaths are tragic and a huge loss to immediate family and friends as well as the wider student communities of which they were a part. We would like to send our condolences to those impacted by these deaths.

At the weekend many people were affected by the news that the celebrity Mike Thalassitis, star of Love Island, had died. If we know other people who have died by suicide, news like this can bring back unhappy and unwelcome thoughts.

If you are feeling unsafe with suicidal thoughts, please remember you are not alone and there are people who can support you. Try to take life one step at a time. Now is not a good time to think about the future, so focus on staying safe in the here and now.

If you are supporting someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, you can also use the helplines below. Trained suicide prevention workers will talk you through practical advice and tips.
